Textile Exchanges Launches Industry Reports and Call to Action for SDGs

Textile Exchange launched its Organic Cotton Market Report as well as the Preferred Fibre and Materials Report during their annual conference which was held near Washington DC this year during the week of October 9-13, 2017. Textile Exchange invited companies to participate in their Call to Action for SDGs, the focus of this year´s conference.

WWF Switzerland publishes textile industry report and rating

WWF Switzerland released a study of the textile and fashion industry yesterday, claiming in a press release that “many textile companies do not care about the environment”. The report includes a rating by oekom research AG of twelve large fashion / sports brands that sell their products in the Swiss markets and includes solutions for the sector. None of the brands score in the highest rank category.

Research identifies reasons for low garment sector wages

GENEVA – Competitive pressures, low national minimum wages and a lack of cooperation by suppliers are three of the many reasons identified by new research for keeping garment worker wages depressed in global textile supply chains. Under the auspices of the ILO, researchers interviewed 14 apparel retailers and concluded that there are a range of deeply-ingrained and institutional factors which make it difficult to raise wages among garment workers – even if there is a great willingness to do so among buyers and brands.

Few minor changes in new version 5.0 of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) – starting March 2017

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is one of the best known global environmental standards that assures compliance with strict environmental standards in the whole supply chain for clothing and textiles. It also includes basic social standards. According to the GOTS, clothing or textiles can only be labelled “organic” if at least 95% organic fibers are used. However, the GOTS also allows the use of a lower percentage of organic fibers (at least 70%) with the label “made with x% organic material”. In 2015 almost 4.000 factories were certified according to the GOTS.
