In 2016, WWF Switzerland and one of its partner companies asked BSD Consulting to assess the climate targets of the company for compliance with the requirements for Science Based Targets. BSD derived science based carbon reduction targets for scope 1 and 2 using two different methods.
The method “Absolute Emissions Contraction” applies global reduction targets to the corporate level. The “Sectoral Decarbonization Approach” is a method that - based on a scenario from the International Energy Agency - accounts for the specifics of the company’s industry. Both methods produced a reduction path which the company should follow if it wants to make its contribution to the 2°-target.
The results enabled WWF and the corporate partner to evaluate the ambition of its existing climate strategy. From this assessment, recommendations for the further development of the climate strategy and effective reduction measures have been derived. Last but not least, the corporate partner can submit the results along with a corresponding reduction target to the Science Based Targets Initiative in order to be approved.
Calculation of Science Based Target for WWF Partner
January 2016 - June 2016
WWF launched the Science Based Target Initiative in 2014 along with CDP, the UN Global Compact and the World Resources Institute. It encourages companies to calculate carbon reduction targets that are in line with current climate science findings and the 2°-target.
